The hill of Montjuïc, the green heart of the city centre, seems to offer bite-sized portions of little bit of everything in a single day: art, nature, and stunning views over the rooftops of the city and to the horizon of the Mediterranean. The hike up the steep hill was a challenge on a hot day, however the cable car stretching from the seaside to the top of the hill would have been even a greater challenge due to fright of heights. However, there was plenty of time to catch breath at the top of the hill, and a bus would have been an option (however it was not necessarily helpful to realise this once you were already at the top).
The museum of Miro (Fundació de Miro) offers a houseful of Miro’s masterpieces. If the day is nice, the surroundings of the museum are also filled with interesting pieces of modern art, which are available to be adored from the shade of palm trees, potentially accompanied by a nice chilled bottle of Spanish champagne equivalent – cava.
The botanical gardens (Jardí Botanic) and the little paths and passages along the hillside provided a nice, quiet getaway and introduction to the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean. It is not necessarily colourful, but the hundreds of different shades of green are soothing and calming.
We ended the day by the magical fountain (La Font Mágica), which bursts into a colourful dance at dusk accompanied by different types of music.
